How to Calculate Stripe Fees
Stripe standard processing fees are calculated as a percentage of the total transaction volume plus a small fixed cost per transaction. When a client pays your invoice, these fees are automatically deducted from the payment, leaving you with less than the invoiced amount.
To receive your target payout, you must compute the "Gross" amount to charge. Because Stripe calculates their fee as a percentage of the gross amount, simply adding the base fee to your target amount will still leave you short. You must use a reverse fee equation.
The reverse calculation formula is: Gross = (Net + Fixed Fee) / (1 - Percentage Fee)
For example, if you want to take home exactly $100.00 USD under standard US Stripe pricing (2.9% + $0.30 fixed fee), the math is: ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $100.30 / 0.971 = $103.30. By invoicing your client $103.30, Stripe will deduct $3.30 ($2.99 + $0.30), leaving you with precisely $100.00.
